Crazy Scrappy Quilt Finish

I am happily reporting that my Crazy Scrappy Quilt is finally finished and looking ever so bright and cheerful - just makes me smile to look at this.

After my previous spiralling woes, I did finally order this long quilting guide bar set for my Janome QXL605 last week.  The good news is that the pack comes with an arm for each side of the walking foot, so I am now able to quilt a spiral with the guide arm to the left of the needle which is by far the easier way.  The not so good news is that these long arms don't work so well if you want the quilting to be closer together because the excess sticks out beyond the back of the walking foot and gets caught in the quilt bulk being manipulated through the throat space. (Thought I should warn those of you who might also be interested in these.)  I will have to learn how to "manage" that but for this quilt I didn't quite succeed and ended up quilting the spiral about 4" apart.  I like the lightly quilted look, just hope it's enough quilting to hold it.

Here's a better shot of the spiralling on the rather loud backing I pieced!

I must confess when I popped the quilt in the washing machine this morning there was rather a lot of domestic activity to distract me and I totally forgot the colour catchers.  Of course, I remembered half an hour into the wash when it was too late to do anything about it,but I am happy to report that all those bright fabrics and the navy sashing and borders behaved themselves beautifully - phew!!

This quilt may, or may not, be gifted to a very special girl, but I am toying with other quilt options for her too, so will have to wait and see which makes the final cut.

Almost forgot that this quilt is another finish from my FAL Qtr 2 list.  Just 2 finished so far, need to get my skates on if I'm going to clear all 6!

Squeezing it all in!

Sewing time is scarce lately so when I spot an opportunity I need to make the most of it.

Friday afternoon was a very interrupted kind of space.  It's still been the Easter holidays here (but school is back tomorrow - hooray!) and mum's taxi/fast food joint was well in action all afternoon and evening, but there were bite sized chunks when my presence/food/money/driving licence were not required so I set to sorting out some bits and pieces.  Nothing too taxing, not requiring too much concentration and easily left at the call of "Mu-um".

So, I started by making up some 2.5" square cornerstones for my crazy scrappy quilt. Quick and easy, just what the doctor ordered!

That job done, I decided to make a start on prepping for my class with Judith which starts next week.  I've decided to use my bundle of grey and aqua fabrics for the Retro Butterflies quilt (though have since opted to leave out the darkest two greys from this project as I think they'd draw attention to themselves a little).  So this bundle became three little piles like so -

I hadn't really intended to cut so much in advance but well, at least they're done!

Next up, as my brain was really starting to fog, I thought I'd tackle my 1" strip scraps.  I've shown you before how I've been trying to cut smallish leftovers into usable squares and strips to keep my scrap basket from overflowing and one day to have a ready made stack of scrappiness to make something fun from.

Well, I haven't really known what I should do with scraps that are less than 1.5" width.  I'm really not sure I see a project in my future that uses 2,000 1" squares!!  However, the frugal lass within hasn't quite let me throw these smaller pieces away altogether.  So for a while I have dutifully trimmed any skinny strips down to 1" (and chopped up a few old pillowcases too) and left them aside hoping that a plan would eventually come to me.  One bin full of scraps later and I have my plan - a crocheted rag rug for no other reason than "just because".

So, much of Friday afternoon and evening was spent in intermittent bouts of stitching strips and strips and strips together.  Poor IG friends probably felt they were living this dull experience with me - the joys of sharing, heh?

But eventually, the strips were wrangled into seven pretty strip rolls all ready for the day I can get hooky with them, maybe later in the summer/autumn if my current FAL plans go well.  And, as a bonus I get my bin back!!

After a good night's sleep I had the joys of the sewing room all to myself for most of Saturday and I didn't plan to waste it.

The cornerstones were laid out with the sashing in the somewhat cramped floor space.  There was an IG discussion a few weeks ago about skinny versus broader sashing and, while skinny was the most popular, I just didn't feel it was right for this one in the end and I went with the wider sashing but added the little colourful cornerstones to break it up a little.

Got to say I love the navy against these bright crazy scrappy blocks and valiantly persevered with a hoolie of a wind to try to get a pic I could show you.  This was the best of a rather wind-swept bunch!
I pieced a backing too, but chickened out of pinning it on the line in favour of warming up inside - that wind was biting cold!!

I nabbed some time before church this morning and read J's pre-class instruction about bringing some scraps with us to practice piecing curves.  So that was my task for this morning - some 5" squares for practicing curves.

Except, well ... I got a little distracted, played a little too much and had a wee practice and very nearly had to go to church in my PJs!!!  It was so hard to have to leave it so close to being pieced into a block.

Needless to say, chicken in the oven for dinner, quick stitch and press of seams and a speedy border later and I am in love!!!!!  Should point out that while I worked out the piecing for myself, I was inspired by Cut to Pieces Angela's layout of the Drunkard's Path block here.

It isn't perfect because I need to learn about trimming the block better, but I am pretty pleased with myself for a first proper go.  Leanne's video tutorial is a wonderful thing!!

And, if the bits that don't quite meet up in the middle bother me I can always add a button, right?

Just to show you a wee trimming shortfall.

This one was a better finish.  Think I need to cut a scant quarter inch like my stitching seam allowance, but at least now I know what to try next time, right?

Definitely a productive time this weekend and I even managed to clear my ironing basket and chores too, all ready for a new week of routine (and no doubt new loads of laundry)!

Hope your weekend was fun whatever you were up to!

Making Me Smile - 16/52

Things to smile about today:

- sunshine, yes really (see up there behind that quilt)!
- not having to wear my coat on the way home from work!
- finishing work for the weekend!
- a gorgeous riot of colour in the Bee Blessed crazy scrappy quilt I'm binding (maybe you can spot your block up there?)!

Hope you have something to smile about today too!

Bright and Beautiful

Whipped up another wee crazy scrappy block on the side of some other stitching, this time in orange.  Isn't it tangy?

I couldn't resist laying out all my scrappies so far.  Oh how I love how bright and fun these look!  Still thinking these would be great with navy sashing, but I'll hide them away until I've made some more to swell the ranks a little.

It's fun gathering these!

Crazy Days

Been gathering up a few more Crazy Scrappy blocks by the way of my other sewing. I like the rich jewel tones of these ones in pink, aqua and purple.

I am beginning to feel that navy solid might be a great way to offset these blocks when I eventually have enough collected up.

A few crazy 5" crumbs are being added to my wee pile too -

Happy scraps!

Little Things

I've been fiddling about with little things over the past week or so.

Another Crazy Scrappy Block for Bee Blessed  (I am really looking forward to seeing this quilt when we get the blocks all gathered and together)

with another one "by the way" for my own collection.  A couple of little crumb blocks, too.

I've been stitching up some squares from the Bee Blessed donated stash to bring together a small baby quilt top for the group to finish.

Oh yes, and one of these little beauties has come my way too!

Shhh, don't tell!

Bee Blessed September Blocks

After a wee summer break from our regular meetings, Bee Blessed will be getting back together later this month for more quilt creating and donating.

While the break in meetings might have allowed us to lose a few of the pounds gained from the fabulous home-baked treats that always put in an appearance at our gatherings (sorry bloggy members, we eat your share too!), stitching has not stopped altogether and the antique tile blocks popping up on flickr and through our letter boxes are going to make a great quilt top soon!

Anyway, it was time to get my act together and make up the block Judith set for September.  It's a version of Aneela's crazy scrappy block (click here for Judith's post with the Bee Blessed specifications) and is a heap of fun to make.  Want me to prove it?

I made this one and then kinda didn't stop until another two appeared.

And then, once they were done I made three more for me - oops!

I thought that these scrappy blocks would make a great contribution to my de-cluttering phase (long story, but had a bit of a wobble over mess and clutter in general earlier this week and am determined that a period of de-cluttering is required throughout our home).  The blocks I made for me are 12.5" unfinished and not bordered (unlike the Bee ones).  As always, I have a little wonking issue and occasionally my blocks veered back towards straight but I still like them.

I thought they would be a perfect way to use up some of my scraps and if I leave them aside and occasionally add more blocks as my scraps build up, one day I'll have a quilt's worth without really even thinking about it.  Great plan, huh?

Anyway, six blocks later that should prove they were fun!

So, if you fancy a wee bit of a quick fix fun block, why not give it a go and maybe even send us one for Bee Blessed (specific instructions here).  It'd be much appreciated and end up in a quilt being donated to someone who needs some thoughtfulness in their lives.
